El Valle, home to cloud forest, abundant wildlife and hundreds of bird species, lies in the caldera of an extinct volcano west of Panama City. Hiking and biking is effortless on the flat floor of the valley, while trails up surrounding peaks are more challenging. A local guide will take you to the summit of the ‘sleeping Indian princess’ for a few dollars if you are up for a strenuous climb. The view from the top is breathtaking.
To reach El Valle, take the Pan American highway west from Panama City, turning right toward the highlands, and El Valle, just past San Carlos—a two to three hour drive.
